Postdoctoral Fellowship in Phytochemistry and Microbial Diversity The Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute at the University of Pretoria, South Africa seeks to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow for a research project studying the influence of phytochemistry on microbial diversity in Eucalyptus. This project will use a highly diverse population of eucalypt trees that was planted in a common garden in South Africa from seed derived from the full Australian native range. MSc and PhD bursary opportunities in the Plant Health domain   The DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Plant Health Biotechnology (CPHB) at FABI invites applications for two-year MSc and three-year PhD scholarships for full-time study at the University of Pretoria, starting in February 2021. The available projects span a range of disciplines in the biological sciences, including microbiology, entomology, genetics, bioinformatics, botany, genomics, plant pathology, plant breeding, plant production, agricultural extension ecology, biostatistics, biochemistry and chemistry.     South African graduates who intend to do an MSc must hold or be close to completing a BSc Hons degree (or equivalent). Those who intend to do a PhD must hold or be close to completing an MSc degree. In both instances a mark of at least 60% must have been obtained or be expected. The Programme draws from the expertise of multiple stakeholders and the training is coordinated with the needs of relevant industries, organizations and government. One-year internships in Plant Health Biotechnology The DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Plant Health Biotechnology (CPHB) at FABI offers a one-year internship to graduates in the Biological Sciences. The Centre’s vision is to utilize world-class and innovative scientific research and biotechnology for (i) promoting the long-term health and sustainable use of socio-economically important plants and (ii) facilitating inclusive postgraduate education and human capital development. The CPHB Internship Programme is designed to expand the depth and breadth of the interns’ previous academic learning in the plant health domain. Interns will also gain practical experience in how to apply theory, subject knowledge and biotechnology for solving real-world problems regarding the diseases and pests of plants that are of socio-economic importance. The selected candidate will work on a project, entitled “Cross-kingdom sRNA trafficking in pathogenic plant-fungal interactions”, which aims to understand the effect of sRNAs in the plant pathology of trees. The centre is offering financial support (bursary and project running funds) to previously disadvantaged South African students who intend to study at Doctoral level at the University of Pretoria. Applicants must be close to completing (or have completed) their M.Sc. degree and expect to achieve a mark of 60% or higher. The programme is funded to the amount of up to R 127, 000 per annum, which will go towards costs associated with the degree and a monthly stipend. CTHB-TPCP Internship Programme The CTHB-TPCP Internship Programme represents a period of experiential learning during which previously learned knowledge and theory is integrated with practical application and skills development in the plant health research environment or professional setting. It provides interns with the opportunity to gain applied experience while affording their mentors/supervisors the opportunity to guide their development. The Programme will prepare interns for careers in the plant health domain or academia by cultivating a range of personal and professional attributes/values.
